You submitted the same thing TWICE??

Why? I just finished reviewing it, and now I'm looking at it again.

"if you have a bad review...don't even bother..."

You need to not take bad reviews personally - People are going to give bad reviews if they don't like something... If what you've done needs work, people are going to let you know. Some people are going to say "J00 R TEH SUXOR" or "This is CRAP" and others are going to give constructive feedback.

This is not a good review. But I am going to tell you what needs improvement.

Firstly, keep in mind that this is going to be compared to "Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom" - which is superbly made by a skilled flash animator. I'm not saying I'm comparing it - I'm saying that ANYONE who has seen both will compare them - they are similar.

The THX part at the beginning was silly. I understand that you were trying to make it feel more like a movie by adding that in, but it was a waste of time.

Your animation needs work. There are places where the animation just stops for awhile, and then starts up again. At times things move wrong, or in strange ways. These are little glitches that you really needed to iron out before submitting this.

The story is tedious in places, and having to constantly press buttons (that aren't always in the same location, no less) gets old. You should have trimmed your script down so there was less reading. Also, you jumped from a "click to continue" style to a "it will continue after so long" kind of style at some point. Be consistent. The click to continue makes sense where there is a lot of text to read, but you'd do well to always have that button appear in the same place.

The bit about Mario and Bowser being "friends" was not beleivable. You should have stuck with something like "You love peach as well - we must band together in truce to rescue her" or something. This would also allow for a "betrayal" later on, when bowser takes peach for his own.

I can see that you put a lot of time and effort into this, and I can see promise - but I would think of this as a rough and go back and try again. This is just not ready for prime-time.

Back to the "don't leave a bad review" topic - how do you know what needs improvement if you only get good reviews? This needs a lot of work. I would be lying if I said it was good. I'd like to see you make it worth watching. I value reviews for anything I submit - good and bad. The one-line "this sucked" or "this was awesome" aren't very useful, but when people say what's wrong with it, that really helps me figure out where I need to improve.

Last but not least, your "VGC" name is too close to "VGDC" - the people who brought out Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom. I think that's a mistake - it's likely to make people compare you EVEN more - and your skill is not close to the VGDC level yet, you are not ready for such a comparison.

Good luck on your next submission. This probably won't get blammed, but I think it could have done a lot better than it will do.

I only laughed once, but it was a good laugh

I laughed when "Person man" got hit with something.. And was like "Wait, that's not..." etc. That was great! The rest, so so. I dunno. It's all right. I think I reviewed your last Particle Man one, too, and I think I liked that one better. Ah, well. This one is topical, and I respect that. But I just didn't like it as much.

It always amazes me when I read reviews of movies like this, where people seem to think the person who made the movie wrote the song, or something. I mean, you even credited TMBG. Weird. Oh, well. Congrats on #20!

SeizureDog responds:

Thats my favorite part as well.
Odd that you liked the other better, seeing how this is basically that plus some. But it is different in parts.

I know! I remember one guy who said something like "great movie but seeing how you didn't make that song I'm going to have to mark it down". I mean seriously, only what, 2% or so make their music for their own movie. But, meh, I guess people can just be really stupid. Anyways, thanks for the (rather low) review!

This needed a LOT more work before being submitted

Firstly, the sounds didn't stay in sync with the graphics at all. You're clearly using nothing but event sounds, and your computer is slower than mine, so the movie raced ahead of the sound. Use stream for long sounds that need to stay in sync with the graphics. This was really hard to watch, as the sounds drifted behind the story, and often covered each other up.

Secondly, all your sound was in the left channel. Really annoying when watching with headphones.

Thirdly, your animation was, shall we say, lazy. Draw one version of each person or object, and move them around the screen. I might have forgiven that if it was funny and well done in other ways, but It was hard to enjoy the story with the sound going all wonky .

It was pretty original, that's all that saved you from getting a 1 on style. But the whole thing really needs to be re-vamped. Good luck on your next submission.

Great animation

Unfortunately, you lost some points for unoriginality and for "me free-o." That was just dumb.

The unoriginality comes in where you were "inspired" by various sources like loony tunes, mario, etcetera. Apparently, when you said "inspired by" you meant "blatantly ripped ideas off from."

That sounds angry and stuff, doesn't it? I didn't mean it that way. I enjoyed your cartoon, and am looking forward to the next one. I'd just like to see some original gags, instead of "Well, it worked with Wile E. Coyote and Daffy Duck, so why don't I try it too?"

Anyway, nice animation. keep up the good work, just try to get a bit more original on the next one.

pimpi responds:

No i did not steel it. I never once saw Wild E coyote tried to cross a border and roadrunner tried to stop him. Never.. So get your definitions straight

Your music going out of sync

I suspect you set the music as an event instead of a stream. Streaming audio stays in sync with the animation. Event sound does not.

And.... There was nothing to see. This was just a teaser, and one that couldn't have taken long to make.

How did this get past submission??

As soon as you click play, it spawns a damn window! I thought that was against the rules. Let me double check. Oh, here it is, under "what can I blow the whistle on?" -- "This movie is malicious (e.g. auto-spawns pop-up windows, free BLAM)" How did it get past submission? Oooohh, right. It's anti-foamy, and almost anything anti-foamy is likely to get through because of all the losers out there with nothing to do but talk about how awful foamy is.

I have to be honest - All these things telling me how much I should hate foamy, and how awful foamy is, and trying to emulate it (to show me how bad it is) - all they're doing is making me compare them to the foamy toons, and say "Gee, you know, the foamy toons aren't as bad as I thought." Yes, that's right, you're making me appreciate foamy MORE. Good job.

Get a life, make something original, funny, whatever - and don't force me to look at your stupid web page just to watch your cartoon.

*pissed off* (not because of your "anti-foamy" toon - because of your stupid pop-up)

Not bad.

It's not pure fbf, I caught a few tweens in there, but nicely done, nonetheless. Very impressive stuff.

Nicely done.

Oro responds:

Yeah. Its still fun though :D

Nice!

People complaining about a lack of backgrounds don't know what they're talking about. I love the inferred background - a good example was when the two guys got embedded in the wall, and then the three bad guys went by, behind the wall. You couldn't see the wall, but you could see the division, and you could see that they were embedded in it. Very nicely done.

I'm looking forward to looking at your sneek 2 preview now.

So...

Graphics and style rated low because I couldn't really see much animation - what was there was decent, but there was very little to go by. What I saw was nicely drawn, so you got some points there - but the few animations you used were very simple, so I can't really tell what you can do when you take the time to really work on it.

Sound rated low because there's not much there, just a single music track.

The interactivity was low because I couldn't tell that was a play button. Kudos for using a preloader. Now... Use something a bit more obvious for a play button.

I hope you do finish the actual project, and I hope you put some work into it - this shows promise, but only a glimmer - my hope is that it's only a glimmer because I just haven't seen what you can do yet. Good luck on it.

I always watch cartoons fully before reviewing them, and I try to respond to as many reviews as possible.
